What Is ListenWithMe and Why Does It Exist?
ListenWithMe (together.fm) is a platform for listening to music together in real time — whether you're in the same room or thousands of kilometers apart. It was built to solve a specific problem: when a group of people want to share music, they inevitably end up out of sync. Someone is 3 seconds ahead, someone else paused to take a call, and the shared experience falls apart.
ListenWithMe keeps everyone in sync automatically, with latency under 200 milliseconds — so when the beat drops, everyone hears it at the same moment.
Step 1: Getting Started (No Account Needed for Guests)
As a host, you'll need to create an account at together.fm. The process takes under 2 minutes:
- Go to together.fm
- Click "Get Started" or "Create Room"
- Sign in with Google or create an account with your email
- You're in — your first room is created automatically
As a guest, you don't need an account at all. The host shares a link, you click it, and you're listening. That's it.
Step 2: Setting Up Your Room
Once you're in your room as host, you'll see a simple interface with a few key elements:
- Queue: The list of tracks that will play in order
- Now Playing: The current track with playback controls
- Participants: A list of everyone currently in the room
- Room Link: The shareable URL that brings guests in
Step 3: Adding Music
To add a track to the queue:
- Paste a YouTube URL into the search bar, or search by song/artist name
- Click "Add to Queue"
- The track appears in the queue and will play in order
You can add as many tracks as you want in advance, or add them on the fly as the session progresses. Guests can also suggest tracks (if the host enables this permission).
Step 4: Inviting Participants
Click "Invite" or copy the room link from the top of the screen. Send it via:
- WhatsApp, Zalo, Messenger — any messaging app
- QR code (useful for in-person events — display on a screen and guests scan to join)
When someone opens the link on their phone, tablet, or computer, they immediately join the room and start hearing the synchronized audio.
Step 5: Host Controls
As the host, you control the entire room's experience:
- Play / Pause: Pauses for everyone simultaneously
- Skip: Moves all listeners to the next track instantly
- Volume: Each listener controls their own device volume (the host doesn't control individual volumes)
- Queue management: Reorder, remove, or add tracks at any time
- Permissions: Choose whether guests can add to the queue or if only the host can
Tips for the Best Experience
- Use headphones for personal listening: In a group setting (like a party), connect one device to a speaker and mute all other devices — otherwise you'll get audio overlap
- Test before the event: Run a quick test 30 minutes before guests arrive to confirm sync is working and everyone can connect
- Prepare your queue in advance: Don't curate music live while people are listening — build the playlist before the session starts
- Use the QR code for in-person events: Display it on a screen or print it at the entrance so guests can join without you manually sending links
- Keep the room link active: The same link works throughout the event, so early joiners and late arrivals use the same URL
